Kaba Gandhi No Delo
The above term refers to ‘the residence of Kaba Gandhi’. Kaba Gandhi was Mahatma Gandhi’s father who’s real name was Karamchand Gandhi. This is Gandhiji’s ancestral house in Rajkot where he stayed during his early childhood. His father was the Chief Minister to the Saurashtran Nawab. It now contains the ‘Gandhi Smriti’, a museum that has photographs and Gandhi’s personal belongings. It is a memorial to the Father of the Nation. The house continues to attract tourists all year around as part of homage paid to the great Mahatma.
Watson Museum and Library, Rajkot
Saurashtra’s rich cultural heritage is evident within the walls of Watson Museum. Centrally located in Jubilee Gardens this museum stands as a celebration of the life of Colonel John Watson. The museum showcases a wide display of silverware, pieces of Mohenjodaro artifacts, carvings from the 13th century, exhibits of natural history, textiles and a marvelous Queen Victoria statue. There are artifacts that date back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Apart from this, you can view the portraits of European royalty and those of Saurashtra royal princes. The museum is open from 9a.m to 12.30p.m and 2.30p.m to 5.00p.m.
The Rajkumar College, Rajkot
The grand Rajkumar College dates back 136 years and was founded in 1868. It stands as one of Rajkot’s oldest educational institutions. It caters to the academic, physical, behavioral and cultural development of students as well as inculcating a sense of social responsibility. Originally instituted for the princely order, this institution spread over 25 acres, still stands as an emblem for quality education.
Mahatma Gandhi High School
This school stands out not only for its Gothic Norman structure but also for its high standard of education. Established in Rajkot in 1853, this institution was previously called as Alfred high School. It was within these hallowed walls that Mahatma Gandhiji earned his secondary education. Plans are underway to alter the main building into a museum.
Rashtriya Shala
The Rashtriya Shala in Rajkot was founded by Mahatma Gandhi and was based on the Gandhian model. Rashtriya Shala started in a humble way in a rented location in Rajkot, on February 21, 1921. Today it is a center for Patola weaving and handicrafts. Your trip to Rajkot will be incomplete without a stop at this location.
