 The mere mention of Rajkot, a laid back city, famous for the royal pomp and splendor of yore, famous for ramshackle palaces, temples, famous for jewellery and above all famous for one among their people, Mahatma Gandhi.
Rajkot was founded by the famous scion of the Jadeja Clan, Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja in the year 1612. It achieved its pinnacle of glory with exotic temple and palace construction under the Jadeja clan. During British rule, Karamchand Gandhi, father of Mahatma Gandhi was Diwan to a Nawab of Saurashtra and stayed here. People now remember this place where one of most famous personality of this nation spent his childhood.
Politically Rajkot is famous for the BJP and one famous son of the soil Dr Vallabh Kataria who had been elected as an MP from the Rajkot constituency, is particularly liked by all for being so eloquent in various forums. Another famous BJP personality, former MP Lalit Mehta, belongs to Wankaner, Rajkot district.
Rajkot today has turned a new leaf and the people have realized the importance of good governance.
